- Addicted KNUST students to betting need therapy, Okudzeto Ablakwa recommends.
- He also urged the Gaming commission of Ghana to improve its regulatory roles.
- While on it, he commended the efforts of Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and management of KNUST for reconsidering the status of the over 6,000 deferred students.
North Tongu Member of Parliament, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has recommended addicted KNUST students to betting undergo therapy. These students are said to be ‘squandering’ their fees on betting.
Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also encouraged the Gaming Commission of Ghana to strengthen its regulatory function in a Facebook post.
Mr. Ablakwa said we owed therapy and an improved regulatory atmosphere by the Gaming Commission of Ghana to the segment of pupils reportedly hooked to betting.
Mr. Ablakwa stated that because Ghana has yet to meet the world’s finest standards for Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in university education, “terminating their education cannot be an option.”
Mr. Ablakwa made the plea while praising KNUST’s administration and Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, for discontinuing fee deferment.
He said it is fantastic that 6,000 KNUST students did not have to return to their various homes this weekend against their will simply because they owe fees.
“I thank KNUST Management and the Minister for Education for their empathy and humanity in reacting favorably to our petitions,” he said.
On April 20, it was announced that the University had compelled around 6,000 students to defer their courses due to their inability to pay their fees.
Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the University’s Public Relations Officer, stated that some students have invested their fees in businesses such as betting, purchasing vehicles for online ride-hailing services, and baking.
